We compare ourselves to others—usually to our own detriment. We judge ourselves unfairly by our own failures and other people’s successes. Heads I lose, tails you win.
And however high we reach, there’s usually someone who has achieved more. So we’ll always be mediocre because the goal posts keep moving.
