The problem in India is also that almost every state has its own language. A native of Punjab can’t understand a word of Tamil. Most other countries have one or two major languages. India has 22 languages that are officially recognized.
There has to be one language that is understood all over India. Hindi was proposed as the national language but this was opposed by the southern states. English took its place partly by default and mostly because of the prestige associated with the language.

But, overall, I agree with you. We should make strenuous efforts to keep our regional languages alive. We can start by speaking in our mother tongue to our kids and grandkids. And by reverting to some of our beautiful traditions.
