Similar to most of my friends and relatives in India at the time, I too had an arranged marriage. Our families knew each other. My husband saw me at a wedding, sent a proposal through his parents to mine, and I said Yes. We spoke for the first time after our engagement was announced.

Arranged or otherwise, I believe most marriages are a matter of luck. And to some extent, they are a function of the work one puts into the relationship.

40+ years later, hubby and I still together. Both my daughters chose their own partners. Times have changed and neither of my girls would have agreed to an arranged marriage. Neither of my sons-in-law belong exactly to the same community as we do, and we’re fine with their choices.
