We were getting ready to go to my niece’s baby shower. My daughter had come over with her family to attend the event. The dress code wasn’t specified but we were wearing Indian clothes.

I had finished draping my sari when I heard the commotion from my daughter’s room. My then four-year-old grandson, Aju, did not want to wear the traditional kurta-pajama. He loved (still loves) his collarless t-shirts and Dri-Fit shorts.

I hurried upstairs to see if I could change his mind.

“C’mon,” I said, “you’ll get to play with your cousins at the party.”

“It’s not a party,” he said. “And it’s silly to go to a… baby shower.”

“Why is it silly?”

“Because… why can’t that baby take a bath at home? Why do I have to wear itchy clothes to go watch him take a shower?”

He had a point.
