I love lush, vivid, colorful language. It gives me a feeling of not just joy but, strangely, contentment. And I definitely plan to read August, which I just pulled up online.

But there are times (I am speaking in general terms) when descriptions can get sensory to the point where the medium seems to overpower the message. Where the writing appears self-conscious and self-indulgent to the detriment of the reader. What are your thoughts?
